About a year ago, I wrote about how Yahoo! Web Hosting had tremendously disappointed me. However, customer support refunded my money for my dissatisfaction. Although they temporarily regained my satisfaction, they didn’t seem to fix the source of the problem; their level of service. Yahoo! is up to it again, and this time with domain names.
Since my original setup with Yahoo!, I have owned blakeopedia.com. It has been setup to forward to blakebrannon.com, however recently that has stopped working. I was on the phone with Yahoo! this morning and their resolution was to wait 72 more hours to see if the DNS servers get updated and start working. Ok not as big of a deal as the other domain problem I am having.
Secondly, earlier this week, I tried to purchased a new domain name. After checking out with my purchase, I never received a confirmation email nor was my credit card charged. Waiting a few days, I tried to repurchase the domain, but it has now been taken. So what gives? After taking to Yahoo!, their advice was to wait a year for the domain to reopen and then purchase it again. What a solution! According to the guy I spoke with, Yahoo! has no controlling over the domain name purchases. It is all handled by the online system through a TLD.
Taking matters into my own hands, I checked the WHOIS database to see who owned the domain. As suspected, the domain has been owned since 1996. So why was it that Yahoo! let me select the domain and proceed through checkout with a domain that wasn’t for sale? It seems to me that Yahoo! still has problems with their Web Services. Maybe they should just stick to searches. I would be interested to learn about anyone else how has been having problems with Yahoo! Web Services.
Update: After having to call Yahoo! back. I finally got a hold of someone who knew what they where doing. They had to expedite my issue up the chain, but it finally works. Thanks Yahoo!
I’ve disowned Yahoo myself. My sour experience was with the hosting also. I fell for the good price and feature of one of their small business packages. I was especially interested in the storage space for a particular site I was opening up.
Found out, though much digging (that wasn’t apparent in their advertising or non-member stuff, that the largest file you could upload was 2mb. It didn’t even bother to tell me right away, just failed every 2mb+ FTP I tried.
OSCommerce was also a pain in the neck. Their support suggested I upgrade to one of their commerce packages, as they don’t support third-party apps..
Nice guys.
