I ran across this a while back and never got around to writing about it. This is probably one of the most educational flash apps I have seen in a while. Universcale is a flash app that Nikon created that puts the world in which we live to the concept of “size”. It shows objects that range in size from 10^27 m to 10^-15 m. And if your not familiar with powers of 10. Thats 1000000000000000000000000000 vs. 0.000000000000001 m!
Even expressing the distance change mathematically, it is difficult to comprehend. “Our curiosity brings us to use objects visible to the naked eye as yardsticks to identify those things invisible and to give them new units of measurement. We are now capable of comparing and ranking these entities.”
The app walks you through planets, buildings, animals, transistors, viruses, all the way down to the proton. It gives you a description of each object and better insight into their relative size.
It is just really cool to walk through this and learn more about the world we live. Anyone know that the Yellow fever virus was smaller than AIDS? Now you do. I can’t really say anymore about it. You just need to go check it out!
